All things be ready
if the mind be so
Shakespeare
Maureen Fisher, MA, MFTI
My approach to therapy encompasses both cognitive-behavioral and existential paradigms. My education and experience in the field has underscored my belief that people change as they learn to alter the way they interpret events and situations and, subsequently, the manner in which they behave (act, exist). Though this change may not occur in a prescribed (desired, predictable) period of time or in the absence of significant challenge, it can and often does manifest in the presence of a skilled facilitator. As the dynamic between client and therapist becomes one of trust and collaboration, it allows for the presence of mind to combat that which impedes growth and change.
The work we do as mental health clinicians defies reduction to exact scientific measures or explicit therapeutic artistry; rather, it comprises the most relevant and applicable of both science and art. Fundamentally, I believe it requires humility, compassion, and an ever-present understanding of the person in the center.
My particular areas of interest and expertise include: generalized anxiety / acute panic disorder, episodic and recurring clinical depression, couples/family, chemical dependency (harm reduction or sustainable abstinence), adolescent and young adult transitions.
